The reason for EA's recent crackdown has been made clearer since the Behind The Sims Summit, where it was announced that The Sims will be teaming up with Overwolf to create the new mod hub. However, a larger part of the community welcomed the changes. The announcement about these modding rules shook up modders with paywalls and their fans, as it meant restructuring and re-evaluating their sites and mod releases. Violating this rule comes with some serious consequences such as account bans, cease and desists, and even account or content termination.

This means that mods must be released for free, although there is an allowance to ask for money for early access for a brief period beforehand.

Over the last few months, EA has been making it clear that paying for exclusive mods is a no-no.
